I Built Two AI Apps Without Writing Code. Here's What That Means for Small Business.
I Didn't Set Out to Build an App.
I wanted to answer a simple question.
Has AI reached the point where an ordinary small business owner can build useful software without being a programmer?
Not a landing page.
Not a chatbot.
A real application.
So I decided to test it.
A few conversations with Claude.
A few prompts in Lovable.
Lots of refinement.
What happened surprised me.
App One: Wardrobe Whisper

The second project was completely different.
This one helps gardeners find the right rose for the right location.

Instead of simply listing varieties, the app lets people:
compare roses side by side
build a shortlist
see seasonal care advice
discover inspiration
organise their own collection

Again...
No coding.
Just conversations.
The Biggest Surprise
Everyone talks about AI writing code.
That wasn't what impressed me.
The impressive part was how AI helped me think.
Claude kept asking questions like:
Who is this actually for?
What problem are they trying to solve?
What information do they need first?
What happens if they click here?
Is this feature really necessary?
It behaved more like a product manager than a coding assistant.
Lovable then turned those conversations into a working application.
That's a very different way of building software.
The Barrier Has Changed
For years, the biggest obstacle to building software was technical knowledge.
Today, it's something else.
Knowing the problem clearly enough to explain it.
That's actually good news for small business owners.
You already understand your customers.
You already know the repetitive questions people ask.
You already know which tasks waste time.
Those are exactly the kinds of problems AI is becoming very good at solving.
What Could You Build?
After finishing these projects, I started seeing opportunities everywhere.
Imagine creating your own:
Customer recommendation tool
Quote builder
Staff knowledge base
Product finder
Pricing calculator
Client onboarding assistant
Internal workflow app
Sales diagnostic
Booking assistant
None of those require becoming a software developer anymore.
The Real Opportunity
The biggest shift isn't that AI can write code.
It's that small businesses can finally build the tools they've been imagining for years.
Technology is no longer the gatekeeper.

Final Thoughts
If you'd told me a year ago I'd be building software, I would have laughed.
